Sandals Resorts to Add Overwater Suites in St. Lucia

Known for its luxury all-inclusive Caribbean resort vacations, Sandals Resorts will soon add one more luxury touch to its St. Lucia property.
According to the company, the Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa & Beach Resort will be expanding with 26 overwater suites in 2012. These would be similar to what many luxury resorts in the South Pacific offer, where the room itself is raised up on stilts directly over the ocean.
The suites will feature butler service, see-through glass floors, hammocks, outdoor showers, Jacuzzis, a large deck and a separate seating area off the bedroom.
While on paper, the idea sounds heavenly, I have to wonder how this type of accommodation will work, given that St. Lucia’s topography is far different from South Pacific islands like Tahiti and Bora Bora, which are surrounded by barrier reefs. St. Lucia doesn’t have that feature – these overwater suites would be completely open to the sea. They would be a wonderful way to spend a week in a Caribbean paradise, though
Sandals CEO Adam Stewart says construction will start early next year.
