Photo of the Week: Steve Canyon

Posted by Michelle Snow under: photo of the week .

2007 Roadtrip : Statue of Steve CanyonJust west of Denver, Colorado, at the start of the Rockies, lies an old west tourist town called Idaho Springs. I could see this statue from a distance, so we pulled over. I said to Rhonda, who was driving, “Can you get me up close for a photo?” She did and this is what I snapped.

The plaque beneath the statue reads: “The United States Treasury salutes Steve Canyon and through him, all American cartoon characters who serve the Nation.”

For those, unaware, Canyon was the hero of a WWII Sunday paper comic strip, and he became a very popular icon for U.S. patriotism. It’s an unusual slice of Americana and I’m glad I got to see it on my 2007 road trip.
